DEEP-TINE AERATION
This is considered the most effective aeration type in the industry. Our Deep Tine Aerator uses a series of 7-10” solid or coring tines at 2-5” spacing, punching holes at a high rate of compression speed while moving forward under 2 mph. Deep Tine Aeration allows for maximum penetration into the soil of any aeration type with the least impact to the playing surface.
APPLICATIONS
We offer a range of liquid and granular treatments proven to help establish denser, healthier, safer turf. For each client, we develop a specific program including specifications for each field based on detailed soil analysis and field use.
CORE-REDISTRIBUTION
Following the Aerecore process, cores may be collected with a turf sweeper and re-distributed into areas that require repair. As opposed to using top soil and seed only to repair areas, cores are packed with viable nutrients and roots and, with proper care, begin growing immediately.
TOP DRESSING
Top dressing incorporates sand, compost, or a blend of both into the existing soil profile. This creates a channel for oxygen, water, and nutrients to move easily through the soil profile and into the root zone where they can be utilized by the plant. Topdressing can also aid in decreasing compaction and providing a more stable and safer playing surface.
VERTICUTTING
Verticutting is the process for removing thatch from bermuda turf which is periodically necessary for plant health. Thatch buildup is a result of clippings that form a thick matt on the surface of the soil which prohibit oxygen, nutrients, and water from getting to the root zone. Verticutting thins the grass to increase drainage and allow more leaf blades to emerge which ultimately improves the aesthetics, ball roll, and playability of the overall surface. After disturbing all the loose thatch from the true Bermuda base, a VersaVac machine is used to vacuum clean the playing surface so that all debris is removed and the field is ready for play.
TURF PLANNING
Turfplaning is the precision removal of surface irregularities (high spots) in natural turf surfaces, while leaving the underlying root system and rhizomes undisturbed. There is no need to re-sod. In most cases, full turf recovery is achieved in 3-6 weeks following a proper grow-in procedure.
3 Operating Modes:
1) Dual Laser mode can achieve +/- 1/4" accuracy, getting your field back to its original grade.
2) Auto Grade uses sensors mounted at the front corners of the machine to follow the existing grade, and remove the high spots between. This mode is used mostly for removing lips from baseball and softball fields.
3) Auto Depth uses sensor adjustments to cut a specific depth, most commonly used when preparing a surface for new sod.
The above operating modes can be used alone or in thirteen different combinations allowing us to smooth over any surface. No "fraze" mower can achieve this accuracy.

Commonwealth Sports Turf has been improving and maintaining quality sports turf since 2003, with combined sports turf experience of over 31 years. Commonwealth was born out of the vision of Keith Kitchen, the president of a successful residential and commercial turf care and landscaping company in Richmond, Virginia.
After Keith’s residential turf company, Luxury Lawns was contracted to maintain turf for several high profile sports complexes in the Richmond area, Keith birthed a vision to approach playing surfaces with creative and innovative services that support the basics of turf science and produce pristine fields in virtually any sports turf environment.
Keith, who founded Commonwealth Sports Turf Services is a member of the VA Sports Turf Managers Association, Virginia Recreation and Park Society, Virginia Turfgrass Council, and the VA Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.

Growing up on a working farm that feeds your family gave Keith an appreciation for the importance of planning for growth. It was corn and peanuts then, now it's sports turf. After graduating from Virginia Tech with a Bachelors of Science in Agricultural Economics and spending 5 years with Southern States, Keith partnered into a new business venture overseeing natural turf maintenance for Luxury Lawns, a small startup maintenance company.
Continued growth over 20 years has placed Luxury Lawns, a company Keith now owns, in the top small businesses in the Midlothian area specializing in residential turf management, landscape design and installation, and hardscape applications. After success in the residential turf market, Keith launched Commonwealth Sports Turf and now manages the day to day operations of the business.
